HEAD OM'IE ON A MISSION
FIRST, WE'VE GOT A FEW QUESTIONS....
Where are you from? Born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona but just recently moved to Greenville, South Carolina-- Best kept secret of the South!
Singing or Dancing? Singing in the car. Dancing… only after a few glasses of wine. I broke my foot in a high school dance class- a whole new meaning to break dancing.
Sweet or Savory? Sweet all the way. If anyone has leftover Halloween candy, you know where to find me.
Coffee or Tea? At least half of my time/paycheck is spent at my local coffee shop, Cartel. They may have wine there too…
SO, WHY FEELS LIKE OM?
When I graduated college, like many, I dove head first into a sales and business development role for a technology company. Don't get me wrong, I hold deep respect and applaud anyone that can stay sane and happy while cold calling and email blasting victims day after day, but the only thing I was "developing" was the deep desire to strangle myself with my headset. This job did however provide me with enough money to purchase my very first yoga membership.
Yoga calmed me down, cleared my mind, opened my heart, and left me feeling at peace with myself, my current situation, and with others. For me, yoga is most similar to the feeling of walking through the front door of my home after a long day. It's the feeling of throwing my keys on the table, putting my sweat pants on, and relaxing with a glass of wine and nowhere to be. Yoga really is that feeling of being at home.
So this got me thinking. How lucky am I to not only be able to step onto my yoga mat and feel at home... But then to jump in my car, and again feel at home when I actually get home? While you and I are snuggled in bed, more than 585 THOUSAND people are experiencing homelessness on a single night in America.
Now this may come as a shock to you, but America is only one little sliver of land in this great big world of ours. In 2005, United Nations estimated that the number of homeless people in our world is over 100 MILLION.
These aren't just homeless people. These uniquely beautiful people are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, grandparents, friends, veterans, painters, architects, teachers, doctors... These are people who have fallen on hard times and are facing extreme odds when it comes to getting back on their feet.
But, hold the I-Phone.... Homelessness doesn't stop at people. What about our furry and four legged counterparts? More than 7.6 MILLION homeless animals enter American shelters every year. Of those, 2.4 MILLION healthy and adoptable pets are euthanized.
So, long story short, since my 9-5 job wasn't quite fulfilling my passion of giving back and creating, I decided to pay the bills by day and build my dream company, Feels Like Om, by night. I know that I'm not the only one with a hectic schedule so my hope is that Feels Like Om can bridge the gap for people who want to give back, but might not have the time to do so. My theory is this...
